Hopewell-based artist Jan Purcell likes visiting Cape Cod during the off season, when she can be alone with the elements. Some of her magical, luminous paintings can be seen at the new Gallery at Verde in Kingston through Jan. 19. It’s the perfect way to readjust after the holidays.
Purcell’s work, oil on canvas, pays homage to the sudden, sublime power of nature, according to her artist statement. She captures the power and magnificence of the sky, its shifting forces of wind and the freedom of soaring seagulls gliding high. Dark heavy clouds are tempered by brush strokes that reveal their weight and force. In “Spirit” the light of an impending storm paradoxically provides a space for reflection and replenishment.
Also on view at the Gallery at Verde are photographs that look like paintings by Deborah Land; both artists’ work invite introspection.
Wind and Waves will run through Jan. 19, 2011. Gallery at Verde is located at 4492 Route 27 in Kingston, next to Eno Terra Restaurant and alongside the D&R Canal. Beginning Jan. 4 the gallery will be open Wed.-Sat. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. or by appointment.
