Black Moon

As Amie Siegel’s video “Black Moon” opens, a group of beautiful California yoga moms dressed in glamorous army fatigues walks stealthily through an abandoned suburbia, rifles at the ready. On view at Boston’s ICA, this is a quasi-science-fiction movie featuring  female soldiers roaming the post-apocalyptic Californian countryside. The piece was shot in Florida and California’s Inland Empire, areas with some of the highest foreclosure rates in the country.

The women wander through abandoned suburban palaces and swimming pools, and in the end a woman picks up a magazine in the desert. A sort of fashion magazine, it has full color spreads of the women wandering this landscape, and as one of the characters turns the page, she learns the future.
